Introduction

Chinese Culture University has five campuses with a total area of 115 hectares. The school headquarters is located in Yangmingshan, Taipei, adjacent to the national park, with beautiful scenery, fresh air, free style of study, and convenient transportation. It is the best environment for students to study their studies, broaden their horizons and cultivate their moral character. The campus buildings are all presented in the style of Chinese palaces, with an elegant and majestic appearance. The teaching space is bright and novel in design, with new hardware facilities, air-conditioning and modern information desks, providing a high-quality teaching and learning environment.

The Department was established in August 1958. It was established for two purposes. First, because mathematics is the foundation of all sciences, physics, astronomy, electrical machinery, and engineering are all closely related to mathematics. Second, due to the budding of computer science, the development of computer science theory and practice is closely related to applied mathematics. At that time, in order to cooperate with the country's policy of cultivating scientific and technological talents, it was hoped that theory and practice could be combined to bring out the effectiveness of basic science, thus the founder resolutely established the Department of Applied Mathematics. There were not many applied mathematics departments in domestic colleges and universities in the early days, so the establishment of this department is one of the few applied mathematics departments in Taiwan. Later, due to the changes of the times, the vigorous development of industrial and commercial enterprises, the rise of the electronic industry, and the advancement of science and technology, these industries widely used linear algebra, mathematical models, numerical analysis, probability, or statistics to solve problems. Therefore, the development of applied mathematics and industry and commerce form a close relationship and importance. In the following years, many universities in Taiwan successively established departments of applied mathematics, which further demonstrated the necessity of establishing departments of applied mathematics.

Right now, the head of the department is Mr. Wen-Chiao Cheng. Director Cheng is a Ph.D. in the Institute of Mathematics, Michigan State University. With the changes of the times, the social structure has a pattern of declining birthrates, and the enrollment of colleges and universities will face the impact of declining birthrates for ten consecutive years starting from the 2018 academic year. Therefore, the department rethinks the goals and strategies of education in order to enhance the overall image and key features. By establishing a multi-adaptive admission mechanism, it adjusts the response strategies of each admission channel in a timely manner, assists outstanding students from social disadvantages to study, and implements diversity. Along with the spirit of talent selection, department continues to expand the source of new students, in recent years, in addition to actively holding department (institution) and admissions fairs, it also holds workplace mentor lectures and company visits from time to time. Big Data has become the focus of market attention in recent years. When the data system is facing the impact of declining birth rate, it will gradually transform to "data analysis" as the core of the system's future development. In terms of curriculum arrangement, both theory and practice are emphasized, with the goal of cultivating "interdisciplinary talents with mathematical foundations", training students to have the ability to discover, analyze and solve problems, and then introduce interdisciplinary courses to grasp employment opportunities and strengthen the workplace competitiveness.
